Safe Distance - Megan Green

What a beautifully written story. The characters drew me in from the start and I was emerged into their story. I couldn’t put the book down.

It follows Haylee Jordan who had a rough start in life, and through all the heart ache she has learned to protect her heart from more heartbreak, one night at a bar she meets the handsome Ryan Porter, a man married to the military.

Ryan has his own set of heartbreaks behind him and the two make an unlikely friendship. Of course nothing is ever as simple as you might think. There are a couple of twists and turns in their story that make you love the characters even more.

I really enjoyed this story and finished it in a flash. One of my favourite contemporary romance that I have read this year. 

Crown of Midnight - Sarah J. Maas

The second book in the Thrown of Glass series. There were times were I could feel this was just a filler book, but still a lot of action. Definitely had more world building in this book.

I also liked getting to know Chaol and Dorian better in this book. Chaol becomes a stronger character and Dorian discovers something about himself that changes him from an ordinary prince into someone who has more power in him then he thought.

There was major plot twists that changed the direction of the books.

Definitely a very engaging series. Can’t wait to continue.

Scarred - Joanne Macgregor

The story follows Sloane Munster who has to get her life back on track after a horrible accident left her scarred, both physically and mentally. She immediately runs into Luke, a boy she had known before the accident from swimming, but there is a twist in the story.

I found the story was fast paced, and the characters were extremely likable, especially Sloane, I could identify with her, also having a scar, I could put myself in her shoes and know the struggle to try fit in while you feel like you are a big target.

The story was gripping and I couldn’t put it down. The only thing I had a problem with, was the fact that the end was very abrupt. I half expected an epilogue, but this doesn’t deter me, would read it again in a heartbeat.

Definitely a must read if you are a fan of contemporary romance.

Throne of Glass - Sarah J. Maas

This was my first book by Sarah J. Maas, and I enjoyed it so much. I bought it on Audible and the narrator was well chosen as she brought Celaena to live for me.

It follows Celaena a trained assassin who is serving a life sentence in a work camp who is offered the opportunity to get out of the camp if she agrees to take part in a challenge to become the King’s champion.

I loved Celaena, she wasn’t whiny about her circumstances, and she went out and tried to change her situation. The love triangle was interesting and I couldn’t decide who she has to end up with.

The characters are all likable. Definitely a great first book to a series. Can’t wait for the next.

Carry On - Rainbow Rowell

Another winning book by Rainbow Rowell. 

I loved Fangirl, and always wanted to know what a Simon Snow book would be like, I'm so glad Rainbow Rowell had the same idea. Although many would say that the Simon Snow story resembles Harry Potter, they should remember that this book is what the fanfiction is based on in Fangirl, you don’t have to read Fangirl to be able to read this.

I felt the book was slow to begin with, but once it gets going, she sure doesn't disappoint at all. 

The characters are lovable and the world of Mage's draws you in immediately. Definitely glad that I read this.

Strong Medicine - Angela Meadon

What a book! At first I was sceptical about the subject matter, I really didn’t think it would be my cup of tea, as I usually don’t go for horror or thrillers, but it got me.

From the moment I started reading I couldn’t put it down.

It follows Erin, whose daughter was kidnapped for Muti, her struggles to get her daughter back and get the police to listen to her. Realising that the police wasn’t going to be any help because they were corrupt, she slowly started looking for clues to save her daughter.

I was chewing my nails, feeling Erin’s anguish at finding her daughter, the suspense was nerve wrecking and even more so when you realise that this is a thing in South Africa, this is real.

Fantastically written and the characters are well rounded, a must read for all thriller lovers!

Why You were Taken – J.T. Lawrence

I have to admit it took me a while to get into the book, but boy once you get sucked into the plot you get lost and follow Kirsten in her discovery that she wasn’t her parent’s biological child.

The book is set in a future South Africa, 2021, you follow Kirsten and her friend Keke’s journey, as they uncover cryptic information. The two uncover more as they dig deeper and find out that Kirsten’s parents were actually her abductors, and that she has a twin.

The way the author connects all the different stories is amazing, as every story line has a purpose. The characters are likeable and you want them to survive. She also uses situations from current life in South Africa that makes this book relatable.

Definitely a must read!
